A BRIEF HISTORY

Before independence, the present hospital complex was the administrative building of Mughuls, Marathas and British regime. From 1568 A.D.

These rulers ruled the State at different times from this building. In post -independence era remained as Governor's House till 1961.

 

Under the leadership of Sardar Vallavbhai Patel, the then Home Minister of India, after the shifting of Governor's House of the present captial of Orissa (Bhubaneswar ) , this building was handed over to Indian Red Cross Society to start a children hospital. Subsequently , it was taken over by the state Govt. on 01.04.1966 and started in the name of Institute of Paediatric and Child Health with a mission to develop it as an independent post graduate institute of paediatrics at par with other National level P.G Institute . In memory of the great national leader Sardar Vallavbhai Patel , this hospital has been named as Sardar Vallavbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Pediatrics (SVP PGIP).

 The Institute sprawls over an area of 23 acres of land , situated on the bank of river Kathajodi a branch of Mahanadi. The hospital buildings stand amidst a lot of trees and gardens.

This Post Graduate Paediatric Institute has 200 indoor beds at present  including 20 beds in Paediatric Surgery,18 beds for Newborns, 12 beds for Paediatric I.C.U., and 12  special cabins to cater children patients upto  14 yrs of age. The O.P.D. complex consists of causality department, OPD for Paediatrics Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, Paediatric Psychiatry, Paediatric Gastroenterology,  Paediatric Cardiology and Family Welfare with Immunisation clinic.There is also provision for  Orthopedics, Dental and E.N.T. OPD care for children. The diagnostic facilities available are Radiology and Ultrasonography in O.P.D complex , Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry laboratories  in the New Medical Ward Building. 

After functioning of new hospital building '' Advanced Care & Research Centre'' constructed under japanese Grant-in-aid project and Development of Neonatology'' under Sakhigopal Project, the total no. beds will be enhanced from 200 to 356. In the building of 'Advanced Care & Research Centre'  there will be facilities for 12 paediatric ICU, 9 Neonatal ICU, 30 Newborn beds, 45 general beds and 20 paediatric  surgery beds .

Besides the above facilities, the institute has a Library-cum-Seminar hall. For academic activities. 24 P.G. students belonging to three year degree course in M.D Paediatrics are trained here by 12 senior faculty members and 11 junior teachers.

 M.Ch. course in Paediatric Surgery is commencing from current year with 1 seat per year.

 The Institute has a Governing Body under the Chairmanship of RDC (CD) , Cuttack. Besides, State Govt. has formed a ''Swasthya Bikash Samittee'' of SVPPG Institute of Paediatrics under the chairmanship of RDC (CD) , Cuttack, where officials from different related departments and SCB Medical College & Hospital alongwith senior faculty members of the Institute and local eminent citizens are the members. Swasthya Bikash Samittee'' takes all important  decisions from time to time updating the improvement plans of the Institute.
